AN INFINITE HORIZON TO LIVING

Year          2019
Place         Pianura Padana, It
Project       Academic work, Atelier Olgiati
Typology    Monastery
Theme       Infinity

The project is situated in Po Plain, in the north of Italy. As everything in the plains lies almost at the same level, the horizon is vast and the scenery potentially infinite. In order to enhance the potential of this locus, the project removes the points of legibility in the landscape by creating a slight curve - one continuous floor of land - and by enclosing it with a wall. The result is a neat horizon, a perfect combination of earth and sky that loses its dimension and becomes infinite. The architecture - a monastery - deals with this horizontality, with this continuity, by making the act of walking a ritual: walk-and-pray is normally associated with labyrinth-walking and it is practiced as a tool of meditation and prayer that is able to solve and allow introspection. Living the space is all walking, stopping, resting, going out to the garden, lying down: it is about living an infinite horizon in the tranquil landscape of the plain.
