Publication: Light, Sound, and the Architecture of Learning
Light, Sound, and the Architecture of Learning is a reflection on the relationship between architecture, neuroscience, acoustics and sensory design, published by the Global Learning Space Network (GLSN India), an international platform dedicated to learning spaces and educational architecture. The article contributes to a broader discourse on how educational environments shape children’s perceptual, emotional and cognitive experience, examining the role of light and sound not as secondary environmental conditions, but as active elements in supporting attention, emotional regulation, memory, restoration and connection.Moving from circadian rhythms and the emotional qualities of light to classroom acoustics, natural soundscapes and what Boarino defines as an ecology of vibration, the article proposes a shift from environmental control towards sensory enrichment and reconnection with natural rhythms. Historical and contemporary precedents are discussed alongside Boarino’s own Témenos project as models for learning environments in which architecture can support presence, restoration, connection and embodied forms of learning.
